Congratulations to our Instructor of the Year, Stephen Pedneault

Congratulations to Stephen Pedneault, who received the MSA Instructor of the Year award.  Steve teaches our Forensic Accounting and Securities Fraud course (ACCT 5546) and has been with the program since 2008.  Stephen is the principal of Forensic Accounting Services, LLC, a local CPA firm in Glastonbury, Connecticut specializing only in forensic accounting, fraud investigations, and litigation support matters.  Congratulations Stephen!

Greater Hartford Accounting Firms Facing Workforce Shortage

Hartford Business Journal – Hartford area accounting firms say they are on a hiring spree to address a region-wide personnel shortage driven by heavy workloads, increased competition for talent, and professional burnout.

While accounting has historically been an in-demand profession, a few changes in recent years have amplified competition among firms and corporations recruiting talent, said Mohamed Hussein, a professor and head of UConn’s accounting department, which graduates over 100 accounting majors per year.

CTCPA Mourns Loss of Past President, UConn Instructor Michael R. Redemske

CTCPA Past President Michael R. Redemske of Avon passed away Saturday, July 26 at his home. Born in Chicago, IL, he was raised in Chicago and received his B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his M.S.T. from DePaul University. Michael served in the 107th Finance Battalion of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After the war he became a CPA and joined Price Waterhouse where he worked for more than 25 years, eventually becoming a managing tax partner. He then joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Business, teaching tax accounting.

Michael served the CTCPA as president, president-elect, treasurer, and secretary, and as a member of the Board of Governors.  He served as chair of the committees on Bylaws, Annual Service Award, Executive Education Review, Membership, Nominating, Uniform Accountancy Act, and Governmental Affairs.

“Mike’s leadership at the Society was critical in helping the organization negotiate challenging times,” said CTCPA Executive Director Art Renner. “Mike was both an agent for change and a pragmatist at the same time. Simply stated, he was an accomplished professional. I enjoyed knowing him as well as working with him.  I will always think of Mike as an ally and a friend.”

As an instructor-in-residence at UConn, Michael oversaw student work on the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

“Mike always volunteered for tasks beyond the requirements of his job,” said UConn School of Business Professor of Accounting and Department Head Dr. Mohamed Hussein. “He developed a one-credit tax course to be the foundation of our VITA program, which he advised. The quality of [the UConn VITA] work is so high that the IRS sent an executive to observe how the work is done so as to share those practices with other schools.”

Michael also took over the leadership of a project funded by the Department of Higher Education to develop a distance learning course on financial literacy. “Mike worked with a unit of CPTV and faculty from several departments to develop a course accessible to young people,” Hussein explained. “His wise counsel and calm demeanor helped us improve our undergraduate and M.S. in accounting programs. More importantly, he is a great friend who lightened any setting with his warm smile and funny anecdotes.”

“Mike made UConn his passion after retirement from Price Waterhouse,” said CTCPA Past President Dr. Lawrence Gramling, associate dean for undergraduate programs at the UConn School of Business.  “He supervised a number of honors theses for students who were interested in tax as a topic and inspired many young students to become tax academics.”

“During my six-year tenure at Deloitte, every single tax student who we brought on from UConn had attributed choosing tax based on how much they enjoyed Professor Redemske’s class,” explained former student Frank Murphy, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Arizona.  “If it were not for him, I might have not been exposed to tax research and taken the path I’m currently on.”

In his free time, Michael enjoyed playing golf, reading, cheering on his grandchildren in their sporting activities, and taking long road trips with his wife Mary Jo. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Special Guest Speaker During ACCT 5505

The online MS in Accounting Program held its four day in-residence class, Acct 5505, from May 19-22, welcoming 100 new students to UConn. One highlight from the week was a speech from our welcome dinner’s keynote speaker, MSA alum, Ann Kummer. Ms. Kummer is a tax manager at Kirshon & Company, P.C., a firm located in Poughkeepsie, NY, and serving the Hudson Valley. She has nearly two decades of experience in public accounting and expertise in tax compliance matters including tax preparation and representation for high net-worth individuals, trusts and estates, partnerships, and corporations. Continue Reading


A Visit from the FASB, CTCPA, and CT State Board of Accountancy

The online MS in Accounting Program held its four day in-residence class, Acct 5505, from May 19-22, welcoming 100 new students to UConn. One highlight from the week was a session called “Steering the Profession,” which included a presentation by Jeremie Richer of the FASB about the FASB’s role in the accounting profession. Joining Jeremie in the workshop were Mark Zampino from the CT Society of CPAs, and Sonia Worrell Asare and Stephanie Sheff from the CT State Board of Accountancy. They provided an overview of how their state-based organizations can help accountants in their work. In addition, they discussed the requirements for continuing professional education for Connecticut, pointing out that each state has its own requirements.

A big thank you to Jeremie, Mark, Sonia, and Stephanie for their time and expertise.

New Online Accounting Certificate Program

Now accepting applications!

The UConn School of Business Accounting Department is pleased to announce the new online Accounting Certificate Program (ACP). The program is designed for non-accounting college graduates interested in obtaining a graduate certificate in accounting. The potential applicants are likely to be working professionals who want to acquire additional accounting knowledge and potential MS in Accounting applicants, who were not accounting majors and thus do not have the required prerequisite accounting courses, providing an attractive bridge into the MSA Program. The program will offer four comprehensive accounting courses; Financial Reporting I, Financial Reporting II, Federal Income Taxes, and Assurance Services over the fall and spring semesters resulting in the completion of the certificate in May.

UConn Ranked #8 by U.S. News & World Report for Online Graduate Business Programs

The University of Connecticut School of Business online Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) program has been ranked #8 among the 2013 Best Online Graduate Business Programs in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Online Education Program Rankings, 2013 Edition.

According to U.S. News, these are the best online master’s in business degree programs, based on factors such as level of accreditation, reputation for excellence among peer institutions, and academic and career support services offered to students.Continue Reading


Professor of Accounting Awarded $10,000 Grant

Gim Seow, an associate professor of accounting at the University of Connecticut School of Business, was awarded a $10,000 grant by the PwC Foundation this summer.

Dr. Seow will be using this grant to develop an International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) component to his financial accounting theory course, offered to students in the online Master degree in Accounting (MSA) program at the University of Connecticut. He will also be working on a research project that examines the adoption of IFRS in different stock exchanges across the world.

The award is part of the PwC INQuiries program, whose goal is “to help domestic colleges and universities incorporate important updates and issues facing the accounting profession into their curricula.” Grants from the PwC INQuiries program also support faculty research in the accounting field.

PwC donated $520,000 to 52 universities in the U.S. this year and has contributed more than $59 million to educational institutes since 2007.
