Professor DeAngelis Uses Pop Culture, Creativity to Engage Students

When his students were having trouble remembering the details of an important lesson about legal contracts, Business Law Professor Mark DeAngelis wrote a little sea-shanty to help them retain it.

That’s one of the “law-lessongs,” videos, articles, movie clips, TV excerpts and commentary pieces that are the backbone of DeAngelis’ Legal Studies Classroom blog. The site has developed an international following and has had as many as 6,000 views in a single month.Continue Reading

Greetings!

As summer approaches and our snowy winter fades from our memories into summer’s warm contentment, we are delighted to share Marketing Department news from Spring 2015 that has been a culmination of networking, accomplishments, and research.

Networking was an important theme this spring. On March 25 our undergraduate students came out to the Benton Museum to interact with alumni, corporate partners, and faculty at our Student and Alumni Networking Event. Stewart Lander ’80, the Marketing Department 2014 Alumnus of the year and keynote speaker, stated that networking events give him a chance to interact with students and alumni have much to offer students as well. In addition, the Marketing Department Awards Reception allowed us to honor our successful students and network with them, their parents, and our donors.Continue Reading


Back from the Brink?

The Greek Debt Crisis and the Eurozone

UConn Today – Eurozone leaders have agreed to an economic bailout for Greece that keeps the debt-ridden nation in the 19-country common currency pact, but only if the Greek government implements a host of deeply unpopular austerity measures, including cuts to public pensions and sales tax increases. The total rescue effort could amount to 87 billion euros in emergency funding over the next three years including an immediate emergency 10 billion euro loan to help Greece keep its fragile banking system afloat and repay loans due this month.


John Clapp Named Kinnard Distinguished Research Scholar

UConn Professor John Clapp, who has been recognized as one of the top real estate researchers in the world, has been named the first Kinnard Distinguished Research Scholar in the business school’s Center for Real Estate.

Clapp is a long-time professor of real estate and finance at the UConn School of Business. His areas of expertise include real estate and retail markets, housing price indices, location of anchor stores, option to redevelopment and Connecticut housing.Continue Reading

Would UConn business students planning careers in corporate America benefit from exploring U.S. military leadership skills as part of the curriculum?

That’s one of the ideas that Management Professor Lucy Gilson has been pondering after completing an intensive, four-day program at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Penn., in early June.

Gilson was one of 160 distinguished civilians invited to brainstorm national security issues with 387 high-ranking military officers during the U.S. Army War College’s 61st Annual National Security Seminar.Continue Reading

Marketing Professor David Norton has a theory he just can’t wait to test, and it involves two things most people love:  coffee and their own names.

“One idea that I’m currently pursuing is whether having the name on your morning coffee cup spelled incorrectly can impact your evaluation of that cup of coffee,” Norton said. “Essentially, the idea is that we like ourselves, and pretty much anything associated with ourselves, so when we are reminded about “me” we get positive feelings toward the object that does the reminding.”Continue Reading

As globalization has ensued, consumers around the world are increasingly making choices between global brands (sold under the same name in multiple countries around the world), and local brands (sold under a given name in one country or local region). Historically, local brands, particularly in emerging markets, were viewed as low quality and unappealing, but with the increased prevalence of global brands, local brands have become more competitive alternatives that signal originality, local cultural connections, pride and prestige.
