New Undergraduate Center at UConn School of Business Centralizes Student Services

Undergraduate Center UConn School of BusinessThe School of Business has established a new Undergraduate Center, combining important student services into one central location. The Center, which was formed over the summer, is located in Suite 248, and will now house the Office of Undergraduate Advising, the Undergraduate Career Development Office, the Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Business Writing Center.

“I’m very excited because this will provide efficient, one-stop shopping for our undergraduates,” said Larry Gramling, associate dean for undergraduate programs. “It will be extremely convenient for students, and provide even greater opportunity for the professional staff to collaborate.”

The new center is designed to offer support that is completely dedicated to the undergraduate students’ professional needs. The Center takes advantage of space formerly occupied by the Full-time MBA program, which has since relocated to Constitution Plaza in downtown Hartford.

Brandy Nelson, who had formerly served as an academic advisor, is now the director of the Office of Undergraduate Advising (formerly known as the Undergraduate Programs Office) and the program can be reached at (860) 486-2315. Kelly Kennedy, well-known for teaching career development courses, will continue in that role as well as creating a new academic advising program that will engage students through all four years.

Kathy Hendrickson is serving as the assistant director of the Undergraduate Career Development Office (formerly known as the Business Career Center). That program can be contacted at (860) 486-5136.

B-School Expands Professional Development Programs, Adds Finance for Non-financial Managers for Fall

Professional Development ArticleThe UConn School of Business will offer an executive education program this fall titled, “Finance for Non-financial Managers.”

The two-day, professional development program is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 23 and 24 at the UConn Graduate Business Learning Center, 100 Constitution Plaza, Hartford.

The program is designed to enable mid- to senior-level business managers to better understand and interpret their company’s financial status, thereby offering depth of insight to make sound company financial decisions.

“Finance for Non-financial Managers” provides the essential elements of finance and accounting, whereby participants will learn about different financial principles, including value creation and value drivers, revenue and expense recognition concepts, ratio analysis, financial statement analysis, time value of money and capital budgeting and project evaluation.

In addition, the workshop will enable the participant to understand and interpret the major financial statements of the firm and to assess how the firm is creating value for its stockholders. Interactive exercises, based on nine public companies, across several industries, will be used to apply these concepts.

The program instructor is Robert Hoskin, associate professor emeritus of the Accounting Department at UConn. Hoskin is a leading expert and consultant in insurance and banking accounting, and an award-winning teacher. He was on the faculty at the UConn School of Business for 27 years and during that time directed executive programs. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Cornell University.

Grad Students on Verge of Exponential Change, Says Senior Executive, UConn Alumna Melinda Brown

What’s the key to staying competitive in a quickly changing job market?

Society Room Hartford EventBuild a strong skill set, distinguish yourself from your peers, and be a productive, likeable, and forward-thinking employee, said Melinda Brown, ’77, ’85 MBA.

Brown, the senior vice president and corporate controller of Coach Inc., a $5 billion company, directed her remarks to UConn’s graduate business students during an alumni-student networking event Aug. 21 at the Society Room in Hartford.

Brown earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the School of Business in 1977 and her MBA from UConn in 1985. She is on the Board of Directors for the UConn Foundation, and in 2012 was inducted into the School of Business Hall of Fame. After 29 years as a top executive with PepsiCo, she joined Coach two years ago.

Since she earned her MBA, Brown said, the world has accelerated at a rapid rate. While functional excellence is still important, today it is vital to spot converging trends, she said. To her parents, owning a microwave and TV was innovation. For today’s students she predicts they will someday be vacationing off the Earth.

“Today everything is feasible, everything is one moment away,” she said. “The next innovation is right around the corner.”

She urged the students to take advantage of every opportunity as they pursue their degrees.

“You can’t afford to come here to punch your ‘MBA ticket’ and become functionally literate and grab your diploma. This is a journey to learn both facts and ways of thinking and operating and well, frankly, about how to confront what you can’t even yet articulate. Those are the areas to explore, to dig into.

“The things that scare you the most are often the most rewarding. Develop your frameworks and paradigms, focus on creativity, EQ, collaboration and leadership—stretch yourself in ways you may have not previously contemplated. This is a safe place to practice being the next version and the next version and the next version of you.”

More than ever, organizations are seeking “design thinkers,” who can identify problems at their root cause. These are the people who will make the world a different place.

“I have one cell phone, two iPads and two computers. But if you asked me when I purchased my first Gateway computer in 1995, I would have told you that I thought it would be doubtful that any home needed more than one computer, let alone one person having multiple personal devices. The designers of all my mobile devices uncovered what I really needed, not what I told them I thought I needed. Henry Ford got it right—he said, “If I asked my customer what he wanted, he would have said, ‘A faster horse.'”

As her remarks drew to a close, she told the 150 graduate students that their future was certain to be exciting—and unprecedented.

“I know you’re going to get a wonderful education,” she told the students, “and I hope you’re ready for exponential times.”

UConn School of Business Announces Inaugural Class for MS HRM Program

The UConn School of Business is proud to introduce its inaugural class for the Graduate Programs in HR Management. 24 students have been admitted into the MS HRM program, and five students in the ABC HRM certificate program. The MS HRM students will be joining our HRM team in Hartford on Friday and Saturday, August 22-23, for our in-residence program kickoff. The weekend will consist of special guest speakers, including Dean John Elliott, industry speakers, and program faculty that also serves as the launch for the cornerstone course, Business Acumen and Strategic Human Resource Management. Greg Reilly, Academic Director of the Graduate Programs in HRM, will be leading the event. Other special guests include Susan Spiggle, Chair of the Management Department; Peter Diplock, Assistant Vice Provost for eCampus; and Suresh Nair, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the School of Business.


UConn Full-time MBA Program Relocates to Hartford

GBLC HartfordThe School of Business has relocated its Full-time MBA program to Hartford, a move that will give students more professional opportunities as well as the chance to learn alongside other UConn graduate students.

“We are thrilled that the UConn Full-time MBA will be part of the Hartford business community, allowing for the program to continue its tradition of providing excellence in graduate education,” said Rajendra Shirolé, director of UConn’s Full-time MBA program.

In the past, the students took their first-year courses in Storrs and completed the program in Hartford and sometimes Stamford. The dual campus set-up wasn’t popular with MBA students.

“The biggest reason for the move is to put first- and second-year students together,” said Professor Mary Caravella, who chaired a task force that recommended the consolidation.

“We chose Hartford because we wanted to put them together with students from the part-time and specialized masters’ degree programs. By working together, on the same campus, it gives them all the means to be successful.

“Both Storrs and Hartford are great locations, each with many strengths,” Caravella said. “But Hartford offers both close and broader connections with the business industry, and will certainly help our students with job placement.”

The program will be housed in the Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford, and its new offices can be reached at (860) 728-2440.

“This is a positive move on multiple fronts, including networking among all graduate business students and also engaging with alumni and employers in the Hartford area,” said Meg Warren, assistant director of the Graduate Career Development Office (CDO). “Our students are excited about it. There’s now an opportunity for the Full-time MBAs to network with professional students in the Executive and Part-time MBA programs as well as the MS in Business Analytics and Project Management and MS in Financial Risk Management programs.

Warren has met with representatives from Cigna, Aetna, Prudential and more, and all are pleased that the Full-time MBA program will be housed so close to their workplaces. In addition to hosting corporate information sessions and interviews in Hartford, the CDO and MBA Program Office work closely with the School of Business Alumni Relations Office which offers a number of alumni networking events running from August through March. Warren said, “Having the Full-time MBA Program in Hartford makes it much easier for students to attend these important programs where they can connect with alumni from target companies they want to learn more about. Building relationships with our School’s alumni is a vital part of our program.”

Alumni and other executives can visit for coffee, lunch, or for more structured programs in the evenings that will interest all graduate business students. Meanwhile the Full-time MBA students can easily go on corporate site visits from the downtown campus. “Overall, the employer’s ability to engage with our students has just become a lot easier. Storrs may only be a forty-minute drive, but it’s much easier for a hiring manager or an alum to have morning coffee before the workday begins or come by the GBLC for their lunch hour than it is to ask them to take a half-day from work to venture out to Storrs,” Warren said.

“From the moment they arrive, we tell our students that networking is critical for an effective job search. Students must start having conversations with people from industry or job functions that interest them,” Warren said. “This is necessary as 75-80% of jobs are filled as a result of networking. Being in Hartford allows us to offer more built-in opportunities for student and employer engagement.”

With the arrival of the new academic year, the School of Business is hosting an Alumni and Student Networking Reception at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Society Room of Hartford, 31 Pratt Street. Melinda Brown, ’77, ’85 MBA, senior vice president and corporate controller for Coach Inc. will be the guest speaker. Brown joined Coach Inc. in 2012, after a 29-year career with PepsiCo.

UConn School of Business Announces New Graduate Human Resource Management Programs

The UConn School of Business just announced two new graduate programs in Human Resource Management available to students starting this fall – the Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MSHRM) and the Advanced Business Certificate in Human Resource Management.

Following a rigorous academic review by the Management Department and subsequent approval by School of Business faculty, the programs were officially approved by the UConn Board of Trustees on June 25, 2014. Applications to the program are currently being accepted for the fall cohort.

Stemming from the former Master of Professional Studies in Human Resource Management, an online-only program previously offered by UConn’s Center for Continuing Studies, the new programs are offered by the business school in a hybrid learning format that incorporates the flexibility of online education with the interactivity and connectivity of on-campus seminars.

“Every course in the program has been updated and several new courses have been added to facilitate greater integration across the curriculum and collaborative learning among members of the cohort,” said Greg Reilly, assistant professor and academic director for UConn’s Graduate Programs in Human Resource Management.

“We are delighted to deliver opportunities for human resource professionals to expand their education through the School of Business,” said Dean John Elliott.

MSHRM Degree

The MS in Human Resource Management (MSHRM) is a 33-credit, part-time program designed for professionals seeking skills to effectively lead and manage the complexity of human resources in a dynamic global environment. The program design enables students to focus on a single course each seven-week accelerated session while completing the program in 22 months with their cohort. Each session includes two integrated Saturday Seminars at UConn’s Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford.

The Graduate Programs in HRM are built upon a foundation of comprehensive curriculum designed specifically to develop strategic HR competencies in a collaborative learning environment of high-achieving peers and accomplished faculty. The curriculum reflects the skills needed for HR leaders to be partners with senior management, including core business areas such as business acumen, risk management, metrics and analytics, negotiation and ethical leadership.

Advanced Business Certificate in Human Resource Management

The Advanced Business Certificate in Human Resource Management is a 12-credit option for students seeking a concentration or detailed study in Human Resources, either as an addition to their existing graduate studies, or as an entry to graduate business degrees. Expected completion time for the certificate is two semesters. The certificate is designed to support students who choose to transition from the certificate to the MSHRM program as well.

Alumni Mentorship Program Forging Professional Relationships

Alumni Mentorship ProgramThe Alumni Mentorship Program, a collaboration between the School of Business Office of Alumni Relations and the Business Career Center, is actively creating opportunities for students to make professional relationships for a lifetime.

Connecting over 100 students one-on-one with alumni in their chosen field, the program spans four cities – Hartford, Conn., Stamford, Conn., New York, New York, and Boston, Mass. Mentoring activities include scheduled phone conversations, email exchanges, informational interviews, half/full day job shadowing, and networking meeting events. Over the 2013-14 academic year, mentors and mentees connected at two networking dinners that are planned again for this coming fall. Most recently, students connected with the alumni volunteers at “speed mentoring” events in Hartford and Stamford. See photos.

Launched in 2011, the program was designed to connect top School of Business students with alumni mentors in business who are committed to building a strong mentoring relationship in aiding students in launching their career. Discussions help the students to learn about opportunities that could broaden their education and knowledge of their chosen field, explore their strengths and weaknesses, and to learn how to communicate effectively in networking situations and build a solid network.

Lean Business: Not Just for Manufacturing Anymore

No one can dispute the vital role that doctors, nurses and other medical specialists play in the functioning of a hospital.

But insiders know that the reliability of the transportation team—that takes people to the operating room, the birthing center, or to their waiting cars—is also vital to a hospital’s success.

At Middlesex Hospital, the transport team has increased its case load from 500- to 1,400- trips per week, not by adding staff but by creating efficiencies, according to Gary Havican, vice president of operations.

“That’s one of the changes that has helped us decrease the average patient length-of-stay by one day,” said Havican. And that’s making everyone happy—from patients to physicians to health insurers.

Middlesex is always looking for ways to improve customer service and efficiency, and to that end Havican enrolled in a two-day, Hands-On Lean Business Process Improvement workshop at UConn’s Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford.

Some 15 participants from various industries, including healthcare, insurance/financial services, creative services and higher education, took part in the inaugural “open enrollment” Lean Business seminar offered by the business school’s Executive Education program.

“Lean Business Processing is particularly important for Connecticut companies where the cost of doing business is one of the highest in the country,” said Colleen McGuire, director of UConn’s School of Business in Hartford.

Once the domain primarily of manufacturing companies, the Lean concept is growing in popularity among other sectors eager to streamline business processes, reduce waste and improve customer satisfaction.

Companies today are facing enormous challenges as they fight to remain competitive and survive, said David A. Burn, Ph.D., an adjunct instructor at UConn who taught the course. The workshop gave participants a “road map” and simple tools to improve business processes by eliminating waste and improving services to enhance value for customers and stakeholders, said Burn, who also works as chief statistician and Six Sigma Fellow in corporate operations with Boston Scientific Corporation.

“We aren’t offering any one-size-fits-all solutions,” he said. “But this is a guide that does work.”

Ann Swanson, director of project management at Prudential, attended the program with three colleagues. “I enjoyed this course because it was hands-on,” she said. “I’m leaving with ideas that I can use right away.”

Swanson said she enjoyed an exercise in which the participants were required to organize a radiology department and were presented with confusing and incomplete information.

“I think that’s typical of what happens in companies when tasks become ‘siloed’,” she said. One of the important messages that Burn emphasized was that employees need to share knowledge and not rely solely on one specialist to address a particular issue.

Peggy Thomsen, business analysis manager for CIGNA, said the class was very helpful. Managing her company’s IT department is like running a small business, she said. She is returning to the insurance giant with new techniques to improve consistency across all areas of the department.

Alicia Huckle, director of financial services for UConn’s West Hartford campus, said she’s eager to try new ideas that will improve work flow. “We all want the same thing, which is a better experience for our students,” she added.

“This is something any business can use,” said Vikki Hampton, assistant director of loan programs in the Office of Student Financial Aid Services at UConn in Storrs. “Across many industries, people are looking to do more with less.”

The School of Business plans to offer the Lean Business program again in the fall, as well as other short-term classes, including Finance for Non-financial Managers, to meet the needs of the business community.

EMBA Class of 2014 Graduation

EMBA 2014 GraduationOn the morning of Saturday, April 12, faculty, family and friends gathered at the Society Room in Hartford, Connecticut to celebrate the graduation of UConn’s Executive MBA (EMBA) Class of 2014.

Joe Connolly ’06 EMBA delivered the keynote address, “The Riddle of Leadership.” After briefly reflecting on his time in the Executive MBA program, Connolly advised the newly minted EMBAs that their journey toward successful leadership has really just begun. After acknowledging the importance of being equipped with the tools and technical skills of an MBA, he also emphasized the role of intangible skills and strong self-awareness.

“Effective leaders get identified because they get things done. They don’t make excuses. If they make a mistake, they fix it and move on. Leaders have a bit of a thick skin. They can take criticism. Leaders can connect with people. They can manage up and down. They communicate well,” he said.

Connolly shared that to learn and grow as leaders is a personal journey; that leadership is “not about you, but all about you at the same time.” He encouraged the students to explore their own beliefs, thoughts, and motivations, saying “…By learning to master and lead yourself you will be far better equipped to become the great leaders I know you all aspire to be.”

Undergrads Win 4th Annual Hartford Financial Services Case Competition

The four undergraduates kicked off Husky Weekend by winning the final round of an annual campus case competition sponsored by The Hartford Financial Services Group on Friday, April 4.

The UConn team, who placed first in the preliminary round of the two-part competition on February 14 before advancing to the final round, competed against students from Quinnipiac, Boston University, Bentley, and the University of Hartford. The team was mentored by Cari Goldner ’13, Hartford Financial Services, and Kathy Hendrickson of the Business Career Center.
