Target Corporation Freshmen & Sophomore Case Competition

On Thursday, February 12th, five teams of Freshmen and Sophomore business students participated in a case competition sponsored by Minneapolis-based Target Corporation. The purpose of the event was to provide case competition training and practice for underclassmen, offering them a terrific opportunity to gain real world business experience with the support of representatives who could provide professional advice.

MassMutual Scholarship Opportunities

In 2015, MassMutual looks forward to assisting at least 30 undergraduate students with a scholarship worth up to $5,000. You are eligible if you are:

  • entering your sophomore, junior, senior, or fifth year of undergraduate coursework.
  • have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • are interested in pursuing a career in the insurance or financial services industry.

The MassMutual Scholars Program is a national scholarship program for high-achieving college students. Application and additional information can be found at massmutual.scholarsapply.org.

The Cornell HR Review Invites Essays from Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The Cornell HR Review is proud to announce its 6th Annual Student Essay Competition, sponsored by Shell, Dell and GE! They encourage submissions from all students pursuing a graduate or undergraduate HR-related degree—including labor relations, industrial/organizational psychology, and business.

Prizes for the competition are: $1000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third. Winning essays will be published in the HR Review. Additionally, winners will be invited to attend the Cornell Human Capital Symposium in Fall 2015—an excellent opportunity to interact with some of the world’s top HR executives.

Essays must address one of three prompts and be between 1,000-1,600 words.  All submissions are due by April 14, 2015.

Global Pre-MBA Leadership Program Offered at Yale University

Developing Leadership Skills Through Interdisciplinary Learning in a Culturally Diverse Environment

The Yale Global Pre-MBA Leadership program will develop your practical knowledge of business and management in a global context, and inspire you to draw upon your leadership abilities in order to make a positive impact in your personal and professional endeavors. It will introduce you to the impact of management education and give you the tools necessary to hone your individual leadership skills. This is a two-week program for recent graduates from cultural backgrounds under-represented in graduate management education; the Global Pre-MBA Leadership Program will help you learn more about global business while introducing you to the benefits of an MBA degree.

Leadership and Impact – The Global Pre-MBA Leadership Program grows out of Yale SOM’s mission to educate leaders for business and society. The program helps you build your leadership skills and capacity, so that you can build a successful career that has a positive impact on your community and the broader world.

Global Diversity – A central mission of the program is to expose students to global diversity. By meeting students from the United States and around the world, typically under-represented in management education, all participants will gain an understanding of the complexities within and between societies, a critical element of leadership in today’s flatter, but nonconvergent, world. One 2013 student commented, “One of the best parts of the program was the diversity and type of people in the classroom. I did not expect to get as close as I did to the many smart people selected to be in the program.”

Schedule for the Spring 2015 Global Business Leadership Seminar Series (GBLSS)

Offered only during spring semesters, these seminars afford students the opportunity to earn a Professional Development Certificate from the School of Business while learning from international business leaders. This certificate is available to all graduate and undergraduate UConn students, and students may earn a certificate each spring semester if they so choose. A certificate is achieved by attending three out of the four GBLSS lectures offered during the semester (students complete and submit a registration form at each of the three lectures attended). Harvard’s Summer Venture In Management

The Harvard Business School (HBS) Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) is a one week management training program for rising college seniors designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education. This summer’s program will be the 32nd anniversary of SVMP.

An annual event at HBS, this unique educational experience helps participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the many dimensions of the business world, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through business leadership.

Invitation to Apply for the UConn McNair Fellows Program

The McNair Fellows Program for Rising Sophomores and Rising Juniors

The McNair Scholars Program prepares talented, highly motivated UConn undergraduate students for doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. As part of UConn’s TRIO programs, McNair is open to low-income, first-generation college students or those from populations underrepresented in STEM graduate fields who are seeking to pursue a Ph.D.

Students who are currently freshmen (rising sophomores) or sophomores (rising juniors) can apply for this two week residency program, which will begin immediately after the end of the spring semester. Students will gain research experience while learning about:

  • STEM Ph.D. career avenues
  • Undergraduate research opportunities
  • The more research-intensive McNair Scholars Program

McNair Fellows reside on the Storrs campus, shadow STEM researchers, and engage in academic writing and presentation exercises.

Be Bold Be Blue: Integrated Marketing Communication Campaign by UConn students

Beside the watch is a photo of a Guess logo placard with students in the background. ‘Integrated Marketing Communication in the Digital Age’ class taught by Joseph Pancras in Fall 2014 participated in a semester-long IMC campaign with Sequel, the brand licensee for GUESS Watches. GUESS Watches is a mid-level luxury brand that defines itself as bold, adventurous, and sexy. An iconic brand, it has launched the modeling careers of celebrities such as Brooke Shields, and is looking to expand its presence and relevance in campuses across the United States.

Students worked in four major functional groups: Strategy, Advertising/Creative, Public Relations and Budgeting, and Marketing Research. Teams consisted of members from each functional group to coordinate responsibilities for the UConn GUESS Watches campaign, which would serve as a pilot launch for related GUESS Watches events on other campuses.

The Advertising group created a strong logo and slogan, encompassing GUESS’ message and values and relating to UConn students with the slogan, “Be Bold, Be Blue”. They used bus advertisements, flyers, social media platforms, and useful promotional to attract students and raise awareness and online buzz.

The Strategy team organized and planned the campus event. Four of the event’s 500 student participants received GUESS watches, while others received branded items for participating in activities like spinning a wheel, “guessing the candy in the jar,” and surveys.

The PR/Budget team delivered the message the Advertising Team created to UConn students by targeting popular social media websites, placing advertisements in areas of high student use, and having Her Campus write about the event.

The Market Research Team focused on creating a pre-survey and post-survey to uncover how people perceived the GUESS brand and watches. Their findings revealed that most students perceived the brand as cool and high-end. Additionally, the post survey revealed that positive impressions improved by 17.7% after the event.

After the event, the students submitted a final report to Sequel and presented before senior Sequel executives, who attested to the project’s value.

KPMG LLP (KPMG) is seeking high-performing freshman and sophomore students who have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, a commitment to diversity and are interested in future opportunities at KPMG through participation in their exciting Future Diversity Leaders (FDL) program.

What is the Future Diversity Leaders program?

  • The FDL program begins with a three-day leadership conference, held in Hollywood, CA, focused on preparing high-potential students with the skills and perspective to be the business leaders of tomorrow.
  • Based on your performance and participation at the leadership conference, if you are recommended to participate in an office visit for a summer internship in KPMG’s Trainee Program, you will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
  • Upon successful completion of your first internship, you will receive another internship offer to continue in the Trainee program. Should you accept this offer, you will continue in the Trainee program and receive additional scholarship dollars. You will continue in this program until the summer before your graduation.
  • In your last summer, you will enter KPMG’s Practice Internship where you will gain actual hands-on experience through interactions with various clients in the line of business that you have chosen.

The application deadline is February 11th (extended from Feb. 6th).

On Campus Interviews:  KPMG representatives will be on campus February 27th to conduct interviews for selected students.
