UConn Ranked #1 Worldwide for Sustainability

The University of Connecticut has been ranked #1 worldwide for campus sustainability and environment friendly university management, according to the results of the third annual Universitas Indonesia (UI) Greenmetric Ranking of World Universities. Started in 2010, the international ranking was initiated to give “credit to those [universities] that were making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and thus help combat global climate change.”

This year the ranking criteria were organized under six main categories: Green Statistics (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste Management (18%), Water Usage (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education (18%). The University of Connecticut (U.S.) tops 215 universities from 49 countries, followed by University of Nottingham (U.K.) and University College Cork National University of Ireland (Ireland) ranked among the top three schools.

Most recently at the UConn School of Business, faculty joined other schools for the inaugural “Green Business: Australia” program hosted by the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). Focusing on how Australian businesses are incorporating sustainable development strategies for environmental, social, and economic benefit, participants visited businesses across Australia’s East Coast, attended lectures and engaged in discussions on a wide spectrum of environmental, economic, and social sustainability issues.

“The University of Connecticut has a long-term commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. These issues affect businesses worldwide and therefore deserve and receive significant attention in the School of Business. As a result of our programs our students enter the workforce with heightened environmental consciousness that enriches their lives and benefits both their communities and their employers,” remarked John Elliott, School of Business Dean.

UConn was also ranked #9 among “America’s Coolest Schools” by Sierra’s annual ranking of America’s greenest colleges last fall. To learn more about UConn’s environmental initiatives, visit the UConn Office of Environmental Policy website at http://ecohusky.uconn.edu.
