School of Business Ph.D. Program Celebrates 25th Anniversary

On November 8-9, 2012, the University of Connecticut School of Business Ph.D. Program celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Since the beginning of the Ph.D. Program there have been 164 graduates including; 35 in Accounting, 48 in Finance, 31 in Management, 26 in Marketing, and 24 in Operations and Information Management (OPIM).

The celebration began on Thursday afternoon with a cocktail reception and dinner held at the Alumni House on the Storrs campus. Current and emeritus faculty, doctoral students and alumni had a unique opportunity to meet and network. It was the first time for many to be introduced to Dean John Elliott, who was the featured speaker.

Friday morning, alumni and doctoral students met at the School of Business for breakfast and sessions designed by Ph.D. students. Gary Powell, Professor of Management and Ph.D. Program Director, facilitated a multi-disciplinary session titled, “Past Meets Present: Lessons from Alumni.” This session allowed doctoral students to ask direct questions about their profession in academia and the tenure process. “I was really pleased that we had alumni present from all career stages and disciplines representing different universities, ranging from the very first alumna of our program to recent alumni, “ Powell said. “Collectively, the alumni displayed the diversity in academic careers that Ph.D.‘s may choose to follow. The students had their eyes opened to a variety of ways they can approach their academic career.”

Later in the afternoon, doctoral students led breakout sessions by department, followed by an evening tailgate and UConn football game.

Ph.D. Program Enrichment Fund*

Donations to the Ph.D. Program Enrichment Fund are used to provide general support for the School of Business doctoral program. Our current priority is to support student travel to conferences in which they are presenting their own research, regardless of stage in program. Since this fund was established in 2007 (at the time of the Ph.D. Program’s 20th anniversary), it has assisted numerous doctoral students across all business concentrations to attend academic conferences. This support has been invaluable to their development and placements.

*To make a donation, go to the UConn Foundation website. Under “Gift Designations,” check “I would like to give to a fund not shown on the list.”
