A Message from the Associate Dean of Research

At the University of Connecticut, we are extremely proud of our exceptional, talented and dedicated faculty. Nevertheless, it is particularly gratifying when other professional organizations join us in recognizing our professors’ many achievements.

Last semester, two of our distinguished professors were honored with prestigious, lifetime achievement awards.

James Marsden, a UConn Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor, was presented the LEO Award by the Association for Information Systems on Dec. 12 during the International Conference on Information Systems in Dublin, Ireland. The award recognizes exceptional achievement and contributions to the information management field. Those selected are considered role models as well as an inspiration to colleagues and students, and are persons of exemplary professional and personal integrity.

Marsden serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Decision Support Systems and recently co-edited a special issue of Management Information Systems Quarterly, Transformational Issues of Big Data and Analytics in Networked Business. His recent work explores the technical and managerial issues of the disruptive changes and business transformations that result from effective adoption and integration of data science in business.

John Mathieu, a management professor, received two lifetime achievement awards, within two months, recognizing his work in the field of leadership and organizational management. The Center for Creative Leadership presented Mathieu with the 2016 Walter F. Ulmer Jr. Applied Research Award, given to a researcher who demonstrates lifetime commitment to applied research.

A month later, Mathieu learned that he had been awarded the 2017 Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which Mathieu described as the ‘ultimate professional accomplishment.’ Mathieu is well known for his research in team building, including his work to devise strategies for astronauts to use to minimize conflict during long trips, such as a future journey to Mars.

Congratulations to both!

We hope you enjoy this semester’s Research Newsletter. You will find articles addressing diverse topics, including a look at mobile geo-targeting, the powerful new tool for business growth, and management research about whether innovation in the workplace is contagious. Other articles take a look at comparable financial statements and whether they help acquirers make smarter business deals; and how corporations can enhance consumers’ perceptions of their products based on favorable mergers and acquisitions.

With best wishes,

Sulin Ba
Associate Dean of Academic and Research Support
