David B. Greenfield ’84, a 2015 inductee into the School of Business Hall of Fame, a member of the UConn Foundation Board of Directors and the CFO of the Hanover Insurance Co., passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 17.

“David had deep passion for his family and friends, his employees and his work. The emotions and memories that were shared at his services last week showed how deeply that passion was reciprocated,” said Dean John A. Elliott. “David was truly a remarkable man – humble, selfless, kind, bright and eager to help others. His loss will be felt profoundly at the School of Business and throughout the UConn community.”

When Greenfield was a freshman at UConn, some 35 years ago, he formed friendships that he very much cherished. When he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in May, his former roommate and friends from Jefferson residence hall came to share the celebration.

Greenfield said then that he grew up in a family that valued higher education. At the time of his death he was on the Board of Directors of the UConn Foundation. When asked why he invested his time to serve his alma mater, Greenfield said he is grateful for the opportunities he has been given and wanted to share his good fortune. “One of the things that I’m passionate about is helping people be successful,” he said. “My goal is to help as many as I can.”

Greenfield was executive vice president and CFO for the international Hanover Insurance Group. Before joining The Hanover in 2010, he had a similar role with AXIS Capital of Bermuda and had worked for 22 years at KPMG. He was active in several professional and civic organizations, including as board member and treasurer for the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from UConn in 1984.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl, who was also his high school sweetheart, and their three children, Jason, Melissa and Aaron; his mother, Rhoda Greenfield Hammer, sister Karyn Barrows and extended family.
