My London Bucket List

In my second week, I was able to check a lot of tourist attractions off of my bucket list in London. We started by attending an Eid festival that the Mayor of London organized in the populated Trafalgar Square. From there, we wandered to the beautiful Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, which is currently under construction. Here, we ended up in an anti-Brexit rally! It was very interesting to see the political unrest that we were learning about in class up-close and personally.

We had two field trips this week to the U.S. Embassy and the Imperial War Museum. The U.S. Embassy was a beautiful new building with a moat surrounding the outside. My favorite aspect was of it was a quote on the wall leading into the building that read “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” The foreign service employees explained that this quote rings true to their mission to advance U.S. interests abroad while creating a special relationship with the country they reside in. At the Imperial War Museum, we were asked to specifically visit and reflect on the The Holocaust exhibit. It was a very informative and impactful look into this tragic time in world history.

Some fun things the group did this week were visit the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and Flat Iron Square for the England versus Belgium world cup game. The London Eye provided stunning views of the whole city. You could really get the sense of the magnitude of where we are living from this experience. Buckingham Palace had remarkable golden details on the gates surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s huge building. At the soccer game, we enjoyed learning and singing the common chants including “Futbol’s coming home!” Overall it was a busy week! I am excited to continue to learn about British culture and enjoy the beautiful weather we have been having.
