With Anne Melissa Dowling, director of Illinois Dept. of Insurance and former CT Deputy Commissioner for Insurance

What I Learned From My First Networking Event

Have you ever wondered what attending a networking event would be like? After three years as an undergraduate student in the School of Business, I am proud to say, I have finally attended my first networking event!

It’s a funny situation. Normally, I wouldn’t have attended the event. However, because I work for the Marketing Department and the event is hosted by the department, I was obligated to attend as a student and as the event photographer. Instead of being the one trying to persuade students to attend, I typically would have been the one being persuaded to attend. I found it to be a great experience. Continue Reading

From Star Wars to Retail Merchandising

OPIM’s New Virtual Reality Technology Entertains, Educates in Entirely New Way

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into the Gladstein Lab in the Operations and Information Management Department. I heard a few things about virtual reality, mostly through the 30-second videos that popped up on my Facebook news feed. Would it feel like a glitchy video game? Or, possibly worse, would it feel so realistic that I would become nauseous or fall over? Continue Reading

Opening Ph.D. Student Speaker Series

School of Business finance doctoral students with Professor Lewellen.

This Fall, I had the pleasure of coordinating the Finance Ph.D. Student Speaker Series. The purpose of the Speaker Series is to enhance the research culture of the School of Business by attracting speakers whose research is particularly relevant to doctoral students. Each year doctoral students of the five academic departments make the decision of whom to invite, decide the professor’s agenda, and otherwise facilitate and coordinate the professor’s visit. Continue Reading

Challenging but Worthwhile Role Play Event

I attended the Professional Sales Leadership (PSL) Role Play Networking event with Mary Caravella’s Professional Selling course and Bill Ryan’s Sales Leadership course in late October. Employers, faculty, and students from both the Professional Selling and Sales Leadership courses attended this event in order to enhance students’ communication skills. Continue Reading

2015 Business & Veteran Career Expo

Business & Veteran Career Expo 2015
Business & Veteran Career Expo 2015

Just three weeks into the fall semester, more than 300 School of Business and Veteran students swapped their summer attire for business professional suits and kicked their job search into full gear at the Fall 2015 School of Business & Veteran Career Expo on September 18, 2015.

When planning the Expo, we realized that students would not expect to focus on their job search so early in the semester, but employers’ recruitment cycles start earlier every year. In order to provide them with the best advantage, we challenged students to renew their search for full time and internship positions early in the game. We were thrilled to see that the students took up the challenge and owned the day!Continue Reading

The Investor Pitch

The iQ program is a series of events that starts slowly, and then accelerates very quickly. It all starts with mentor meetings, followed by the application, and then the final pitch to get accepted to iQ. Then, a moment’s anticipation, then workshops, a flood of new ideas, constant networking, and barely enough time to breathe. All the while, you’re working on prototypes, building your business model, and then…  Continue Reading

Coaches, Leading and Talent

Some may not like sports as a metaphor for life, and if you fall in that category, you might want to stop here.  But I think it can be useful, and I want to talk about three examples in sport and draw inferences to life.

I am the dean of the business school at UConn, so not surprisingly, I cite our Geno Auriemma as an example of leadership of the highest order.  Geno has coached the women’s basketball team since 1985 and, in the process, has garnered 10 NCAA championships. His championship record is unsurpassed among women’s coaches, and tied with legendary UCLA men’s coach John Wooden.  Geno headlines the “Geno Auriemma UConn Leadership Conference’’ and invariably talks about his experiences as a coach, and the teams he has been privileged to train. Continue Reading
