With the passing of professor emeritus Larry Gramling on Tuesday, the School of Business has lost a beloved leader, who taught tens of thousands of accounting students during his 38-year tenure at UConn.

“Larry was a much-loved, much-admired colleague and friend, not only within the School of Business but across the University and in the professional community of accountants,’’ said School of Business Dean John A. Elliott. “Our hearts are heavy.’’

Gramling passed away Tuesday at age 77. He had served as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the School of Business for six years. He also served on the President’s Athletic Advisory Committee, as interim director of the University Honors Program, and as a member of the University Senate for more than 15 years. He was the first academic to serve as President of the Connecticut CPA society, strengthening the relationship between UConn and the accounting industry.

George Plesko, head of the accounting department, described Gramling as a key leader not only in the accounting department but in the School as a whole. “But more than that, Larry was a thoughtful and kind colleague, mentor, and friend,’’ he said.

“I never met one of his students who didn’t have great things to say about him,’’ said professor emeritus Mo Hussein, a longtime friend. “Actually, I never met any person who didn’t have something good to say about Larry.’’
