Professor Phillips’ dissertation addresses the relation betweeen compensation-based incentives and corporate effective tax rates. His research has been published in both The Accounting Review and The Journal of the American Taxation Association. Professor Phillips' publications address factors associated with corporate tax outsourcing, the use of deferred tax expense to detect earnings management, the relationship between contingent fees and taxpayer compliance, and whether tax incentives motivate individuals to give to charity. Professor Phillips has received a departmental teaching award at the University of Connecticut, university-wide and departmental teaching awards at the University of Iowa and received a 1996 Deloitte & Touche Doctoral Fellowship Award.
