/ State
Taxes
The U.S.
has a Federal Income Tax, and some states (including Connecticut) also have a
State Income Tax that may impact you.
Most individuals who earn income in the U.S. are required to complete and submit tax forms once a year (usually due by April
15). See the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website: IRS,
IRS:
Foreign Students & Scholars, IRS:
Foreign Student/Scholar Filing Requirements.
In January or February, each of your U.S. employers will send you a W-2 form showing your earnings for the previous year,
and how much money was paid in taxes. You may also receive other forms, such as
tuition forms from universities, interest earned forms from banks, etc. If you
are required to submit a Tax Return, you use this information to complete the
tax forms that apply to your situation. The tax forms help you figure whether
you owe tax money, or if you overpaid, and money will be refunded to you.
All international students must submit Form 8843 (even
if they earned no income in the U.S.): VITA
Form 8843 Information
> For information on what you are required to do, and for forms, see: IRS
> Between February and March of each year, Tax Return (and supplemental)
forms are available for people to pick up at many local libraries and post
offices.
> The School
of Business Accounting
Department has offered free Tax Return preparation for qualifying individuals:
VITA.
> There are also tax professionals that you can hire to complete your tax
forms for you (you provide them with corresponding paperwork and information).
Depending on your circumstances, different forms may be required, making the
process more complicated (for example: if you are a home owner, if you own your
own business, if you earn interest on savings accounts, etc.).
> Tax laws change frequently, so review all information each year.
Property
/ Motor
Vehicle (including Motor Cycles, Boats, etc.) Taxes -
Towns in Connecticut require tax payments for property owned (not
rented) and for motor vehicles owned (whether registered or not). You
can call your Town
Hall Tax Collector Office for more information. Tax bills are
typically mailed to you once or twice a year.
Sales Tax - Connecticut's tax rate is
currently 6% (other states' tax rates may be different). Most items that
you purchase while shopping will have a 6% tax added to them when you
pay (see Sales
Tax Exemptions for exceptions).
