Certificate Program in Healthcare Information Technology
Overview
The Certificate Program in Healthcare
Information Technology is an innovative non-credit program of study
tailored to meet the educational needs of entry to mid-level
healthcare IT professionals. The program focuses on the introduction
of topics that familiarizes the healthcare professional with both an
understanding of the healthcare environment and the application of
information systems within those settings. A college degree is not
required to apply for this program.
The entire certificate program is offered online and was
developed through a partnership with the University of Connecticut
School of Business Administration and the Healthcare Information and
Management Systems Society (HIMSS). It is administered and offered
through the University's College of Continuing Studies. Course
content integrates industry expertise with cutting edge research
topics and was developed through unique "expert teams" that included
both academicians and leading industry experts. Most courses involve
a series of comprehensive on-line narratives and readings, group
discussion and instructive independent learning activities.
Value and Affordability - The Benefits of
Certification
Professional certification has increasingly
become a valued credential in many fields, including the healthcare
industry. As the information technology field grows in complexity,
educational advancement through certification provides a recognized
level of distinction and achievement. This certification program
enables healthcare professionals to expand their knowledge of issues
and challenges within the IT field, while gaining an improved
understanding of cutting edge/emerging IT applications and support
systems. The program has been designed to be very affordable, and
allows completion of class assignments on an asynchronous basis.
Program Requirements
Five courses are required for
certification. Students may elect to complete individual courses
without pursuing certification. Students seeking certification are
required to complete one foundation course and two courses each from
a basic and an advanced cluster. Two different foundation courses
are offered - one designed to introduce IT professionals to
healthcare concepts and one familiarizing healthcare professionals
with IT concepts, and students select the appropriate offering based
on their professional background. Completion of the foundation
course is required before a student can register for additional
courses.
The courses within this program introduce students to clinical
and administrative systems that deal with scheduling and finances.
In addition, coursework will ensure that an IT professional can plan
and manage projects, analyze and evaluate processes, communicate
effectively with key constituents and understand government
regulations specific to healthcare.
