HSMG 383 - Health Care Economics - 3 credits

The course enables students to gain a better appreciation and
understanding of the business and economics associated with the
health care sector. With the health care industry generating $1
out of every $6 in the U.S. economy, health care has become a
significant part of the overall US economy. This course covers
a number of economic issues and policies pertaining to the provider-side
of the health care industry. Issues include the production of
health, organizational structure and performance, cost and benefit
analysis, the market for medical care, and the role of government
in the health care industry. Hot topics include health care retail
enterprises and focused factories, drug price controls, pay-for-performance,
fat taxes, and the interplay of nonprofit and for-profit health
care providers. The topics introduced and discussed in this course
should assist students in becoming more informed consumers and
producers of health care within our delivery system.
HSMG 384 - Competitive Strategies for Healthcare Organizations-
3 credits

Effective competitive strategies are decisive in the success or
failure of health care organizations. This course will explore
the essential elements of strategy and will also delve into the
practice of strategic planning, with an emphasis on competitive
strategic thinking, the assessment of the environment, and effective
execution. Readings will be drawn from the current literature
and relevant case studies. The format of the class will include
lectures that explore the strategic environment of different sectors
of the health care economy, and class discussion, with a focus
on the ideas that pave the way for strategy formulation, the mobilization
of complex organizations for action, and basic planning practices
(e.g. forecasting) that are fundamental tools for executive decision
making.

HSMG 385 - Management of long-Term Health Care Organizations
- 3 credits
Instructor: L. Nurick; Thursday evenings, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
This course examines administrative processes within the long-term
health care facility including issues related to organizational
effectiveness, financial management, regulatory structure, operational
procedures, policies and practices.
