Certificate Program in Long-Term Health Care Management

The Certificate Program in Long-Term Healthcare Management trains students for a rewarding career in long-term health care management and assists students in successfully preparing for state and national licensure exams for long-term healthcare administration. The program is fully approved by the Connecticut Department of Health Services (DHS) and meets all state regulations for long-term healthcare administration licensure requirements.

Certificate Requirements
Applicants to the certificate program must hold at least a bachelor's degree in any discipline, demonstrate leadership ability, and have some familiarity with the long-term healthcare management field. The certificate program is a 12 credit graduate program that consists of two basic components: A three credit course in Management of Long-Term Healthcare Organizations and a nine credit, 900 hour supervised internship. Students with master's level preparation that meets DHS statute requirements need only complete a 500 hour internship and the required three credit course. The three credit course is offered each semester in Hartford.

Internship Information
Assistance is provided to each student in securing an approved internship site. At each internship site, a licensed administrator serves as the student's preceptor. Preceptors are selected for participation in our program based upon factors including professional work experience, education, and leadership skills. Throughout the internship, students learn first-hand about administrative decision-making and the operational characteristics of long-term healthcare organizations.

Students may conduct the internship on a full or part-time basis and can conduct it concurrent with the three credit required course or up to 12 months following. Students having a business or personal affiliation with a specific facility can complete up to a maximum of 450 hours within this facility. The remaining 450 hours must be completed in another facility. In many cases, this can be done in an affiliate facility for organizations having multiple sites.

Monthly Internship Meetings
Monthly internship meetings are held for all students participating in the program. These are generally held in different long-term healthcare facilities throughout Connecticut. These meetings provide students with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the long-term healthcare management field and to gain the perspectives of different long-term healthcare administrators. The meetings also provide exposure to a diverse group of facilities that represent the wide range of services offered within the long-term care setting and facilitates networking opportunities for students in the program. Students also participate in presentations with stakeholders that represent the regulatory, legislative and collective bargaining segments of the long-term health care field.

Licensure Review
The Connecticut DHS administers the long-term healthcare administration licensure examinations and students are required to pass both a state and national multiple choice exam for licensure. Examinations are offered six times each year by DHS to students completing certification requirements. As part of our effort to ensure that students in the program are prepared to sit for the licensure examinations, we provide review materials and assistance to students enrolled in the program. Over 99% of our students participating in this review process have successfully completed the examinations.
