Our Mission

The mission of the Center for Healthcare & Insurance Studies at the University of Connecticut is to serve as a valued educational resource for health care management in the Northeast. This is accomplished through excellence in teaching, research, and community service and partnerships with the health care and business communities.

The Center for Healthcare & Insurance Studies

Since 1952, the University of Connecticut has been a leader in preparing students for professional careers in the field of health care management. As the first institution of higher education in the United States to study method improvement techniques for hospitals, the university secured its role as a leader in health systems management and has emerged as a resource for the State of Connecticut, as well as the nation, with respect to healthcare management education, research and service.

The Center for Healthcare and Insurance Studies, established in 1976, has advanced that reputation, playing an integral role in the development of health systems as an academic field of study and by responding to the changing dynamics of our healthcare industry. Since its inception, The Center for Healthcare and Insurance Studies has been based in the University’s School of Business, and focuses on studying healthcare and insurance issues from a business perspective. The Center is multi-disciplinary in scope, and works closely with a number of other academic units within the University including the University’s Health Center in Farmington.

Today, the University of Connecticut is among a small number of public universities offering advanced degree programs specializing in healthcare management. We offer degree programs in healthcare management at both the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as specialized certificate programs. Our programs are small and personalized, but draw upon the resources available within a large research-based university setting.
