Kamal Mustafa

Class of 1971 - 1999 Inductee

Mr. Mustafa has spent his entire career in investment banking. He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology and his MBA in Finance, Management Information and Statistics from the University of Connecticut. Thanks to the guidance and kindness of Professor T.K. Lindsay of the UConn Business School, Kamal got his first job in the Corporate Financial Planning Department at the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company.

In 1977, Kamal joined Citibank as the Head of Financial Consulting and eventually became Managing Director & Head of Corporate Finance Origination U.S.A. where he was responsible for all of the corporate finance origination of the U.S. Capital Market Groups. He also managed and opened all of Citibank’s Merchant Banking Group regional offices across the U.S. Kamal went on to become the Managing Director & Head of Global Mergers and Acquisitions for Citibank. In less than one year, Citibank moved from a non-existent position in M&A activity league rankings to third in deals initiated amongst all U.S. investment banks, and fifth in total deals done according to Corporate Financing Weekly.

In 1986, Kamal was recruited by Paine Webber, Inc. to be Managing Director of Mergers and Acquisitions and Managing Director of Merchant Banking. After just a few years, Kamal joined KSP, John Kluge’s $2 billion leveraged buyout firm, as the Managing Director & Executive Vice President. He spearheaded their efforts at identifying, acquiring and financing transactions for leveraged buyout funds and was also a Managing Director of Kluge and Company, where he was responsible for structuring and financing Kluge’s acquisitions.

Although successful and fulfilled by his professional successes, Kamal’s first love is his family. Accordingly, Kamal chose to ‘retire’ in early 1990 to spend more time with his family, serve on boards and pursue his own investments. However, this retirement was short lived. Kamal established BlueStone Capital Partners L.P. along with six Wall Street veterans in 1996 and became its founder and Chairman. Bluestone Capital Partners is a full service investment banking and brokerage firm dedicated to providing the highest quality products and services to emerging growth and small to medium-size companies worldwide. Kamal had finally incorporated his vision of providing to the small cap market the kind of sophisticated services and distribution that are standard fare for Wall Street giants. In three short years, Bluestone Capital has prospered and grown into an international success story with offices around the world. Kamal is also very proud of his involvement on the board of directors of several public and private companies.

"In the words of Groucho Marx, "I would not join a club that would have me as a member." In my case, I am proud to be a member of a club for which I would not qualify if I were to try to meet its standards of today. And finally, in my own words, I must say that I am extraordinarily impressed with the existing leadership of the Business School at the University of Connecticut."
