General Exam
updated November 1, 2005
1. The general exam will be given once per year in the fall
(September or October). Students will ordinarily take it during the
fall semester of their third year. According to Graduate School policy,
coursework must be substantially completed for a student to take the
exam, but it need not be entirely completed.
2. The exam will consist of four questions, one based on each of the
required Management doctoral seminars (MGMT 401, 402, 403, and 404).
3. Candidates are encouraged to meet with each seminar instructor no more
than one month before the exam to receive guidance on how to prepare
for the question for that seminar.
4. Each question will be
graded by the instructor of the seminar (if available, a substitute
Management doctoral faculty member if not) as well as one other member
of the Management doctoral faculty.
5. Grades for each question
will be A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, or F. Numerical
point values will be assigned to each of these grades as in the
Graduate Catalog (e.g., A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7 ..... D- = 0.7, F =
0).
6. The questions with the best (i.e., highest) three grades will be selected.
7. To pass the exam completely, a candidate must have no failing grade
(i.e., grade less than 2.0) on any of the best three questions and an
overall average of the best three question grades of 3.0 or better.
8. If the candidate does not pass the exam completely on the first
attempt, he or she may retake the question for any seminar or seminars.
If any question is retaken, the candidate will have the option of
taking it within three months of receipt of feedback on the original exam. All retaken questions
will be different from the original questions for seminars.
9. If the candidate retakes one or more questions, the evaluation
procedure will be the same as steps 4-6 above. The grade on any retaken
question will be substituted for the grade on the original question for
that seminar and a new overall average of the best three question
grades will be computed.
10. After grading of the retaken examination is completed, the standards set out in step 7 will be
applied. If the candidate still does not meet these standards, no
additional opportunities for taking the exam will be offered and a
recommendation will be made to dismiss the candidate from the doctoral
program.
11. The Director of the Management Ph.D. Program will
be responsible for administering the exam and providing numerical
feedback to candidates. Feedback is expected to be provided within
three weeks of the exam.
