Biography:

Joe’s experience in accounting education includes teaching, leading professional development seminars, developing and facilitating corporate training programs, managing committees and task forces, writing curriculums, and creating assessment and evaluation tools and other education resources. He has written two curriculums that are used nationwide by high school accounting and business teachers. Joe is an Accounting Instructor In-Residence for the University of Connecticut at the Stamford (CT) campus. He also teaches professional development courses for the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU SCPS). In 2004, he was engaged by NYU SCPS to be the subject matter expert for course development and facilitation of MCI’s Corporate Training Program in Financial Reporting and Analysis. In 2005, Joe received the NYU SCPS Award for Teaching Excellence. Previously, Joe was the Manager of Education Services for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where he developed an education strategy to serve teachers and students and created financial literacy materials. Prior to working with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Joe was the Manager of Education Programs for the Academic and Career Development Team at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) where he created products and developed programs to enhance accounting education at the college and high school level and to inform and educate students about careers in accounting and as a CPA. In this role, Joe also designed the Accounting Education Center web site, which earned a WebCPA Star Award, and the Educational Competency Assessment (ECA) web site, a resource that assists educators with incorporating the AICPA’s Core Competencies into courses and across their curriculum, assessing student performance, and evaluating their courses and programs. The AICPA received a NACE Award of Excellence in Educational Programming for developing the ECA site. Joe also authored the AICPA’s Takin’ Care of Business Education Handbook, a high school curriculum consisting of 15 comprehensive lesson plans and activities, which is a key component of the AICPA’s “CPA Information Package.” By developing and facilitating professional development workshops nationwide and creating a train-the-trainer program, the CPA Information Package is now used by high school business and accounting teachers nationwide. The AICPA received a NACE Award of Excellence for creating the CPA Information Package. In addition, Joe worked with AICPA members charged with setting and implementing AICPA education initiatives. This included mapping the AICPA Core Competency Framework to the skills tested on the Uniform CPA Examination and leading the effort to have an Advanced Placement (AP) high school accounting course adopted by the College Board. (Joe continues to lead the AP initiative by holding workshops and training sessions and developing resources for participating teachers.) Joe was also instrumental in creating a national student recruiting program (Accounting for Your Future) that connected State CPA Societies, their staff and members, Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) chapters, and local high schools. Joe has also worked as a consultant for the National Academy Foundation (NAF), the Connecticut Society of CPAs (CSCPA), and Aplia. He created and authored a customized accounting curriculum called Analyzing Financial Statements for NAF’s Academy of Finance. The curriculum, a set of project-based learning activities, includes four case-based simulations dealing with financial statement analysis, credit analysis and business combinations. In addition, the curriculum includes over 125 pages of material and information that describe financial ratios and measures and how the ratios and measures are used to assess a company’s operating performance and financial condition. For the CSCPA, Joe authored “Me, Myself, My Money,” a set of eleven financial literacy lesson plans and activities for high school and college students. Most recently, through the CSCPA, every incoming freshman at Central Connecticut State University attended a financial literacy seminar in which “Me, Myself, My Money” was used to increase awareness of basic financial concepts necessary for responsible personal financial management. For Aplia, a division of Cengage Learning, Joe wrote online, interactive problem sets for financial accounting textbooks. Joe has had two articles ("Using Real-World Scenarios in Accounting Classes," April 2000, and "Revamping High School Accounting Courses," February 2002) published in Business Education Forum, the journal of the National Business Education Association (NBEA), and has served as the Forum’s Accounting section editor (2002 – 2003). Prior to joining the AICPA, Joe was a business education teacher at Bristol (CT) Central High School and East Haven (CT) High School. He is a Connecticut State Board of Education Certified Business Education Teacher as well as a certified School Business Administrator. Prior to entering the field of education, Joe worked in the audit and tax departments of the public accounting firms Price Waterhouse and Deloitte & Touche. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CT) and holds an MBA in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Connecticut. Joe is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Business Education Association. He has also served on Beta Alpha Psi’s (BAP) Advisory Forum. Recently, Joe chaired a task force of nationally recognized secondary and post-secondary accounting educators for NBEA that was charged with revising the Association’s learning standards for accounting. In 2007, Joe was the recipient of NBEA’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his achievements, dedication, and personal and professional commitment to advancing accounting education while serving with the AICPA. In 2002, Joe received from the Michigan Association of CPAs the Chair Service Award, which recognizes service to the Association as rising above and beyond the traditional level of volunteerism.
