Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Rummel is interested in the application of economics and quantitative methods to problems of production and project management. Within this area of interest, he has worked on projects involving the management of advanced manufacturing technology, scheduling and planning systems, project design and control, manufacturing strategy, the interaction between operations and managerial accounting, and process control and improvement (quality, six sigma, lean manufacturing).
Biography:
Dr. Rummel received his Ph.D. from the Simon School at the University of Rochester and came to the University of Connecticut in 1995 after teaching for nine years at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. His research focuses on building models for manufacturing planning and control problems, especially those in scheduling, project management and inventory systems, and has published in Management Science, Operations Research, Decision Sciences, the European Journal of Operations Research, and the Journal of Manufacturing and Operations Management. His paper on managing yields in fiber optic cable manufacturing won the Best Paper award at the School of Business in 1996.
Dr. Rummel teaches undergraduate, MBA, Ph.D. and executive education courses in the School of Business and has served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Administration since 2001. Prior to that, he served as the Co-Director of the Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) program. In 1998, he was named a Lawrence J. Ackerman Scholar of Management, and in 2000 he was awarded the Cizik Professorship in Manufacturing and Technology Management.
