Outstanding Scholars Program

The Graduate School offers fellowships on a competitive basis for outstanding new graduate students. Each fellowship includes a stipend of $7,000 for the academic year, provided by The Graduate School, and a half or full graduate assistantship from the academic department. The award is renewable for two additional years (a total period of three years). There is no application form; applicants are nominated by the academic departments.

Multicultural Scholars Program

The Graduate School and the Chancellor's Office have established a fund for the promotion of diversity within graduate education. This program functions to promote the recruitment and retention of diverse populations of graduate students by matching the funding support provided by schools, departments, or fields of study. Students are nominated by the graduate program to which they are applying. There is no application form. Eligibility for support is based on the student's academic qualifications, U.S. citizen or permanent resident status, and the demonstrated need for increased cultural diversity within the field of study.

Predoctoral Fellowships

During the 2006-2007 school year, the School of Business Ph.D. Program was given $20,378 for Predoctoral Fellowships. This amount was divided among the five School of Business departments in proportion to the number of full-time doctoral students in residence. The departments decide how to allocate the money among their students.

Summer Fellowships

During the 2006-2007 school year, the School of Business was given $2,300 for Summer Fellowships. This amount was divided equally among the academic departments, and the departments decided allocations among their students. To be eligible for this award, the student must be in good academic standing.

Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

Each year, the Research Foundation funds the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships for advanced doctoral students. The purpose is to enable students to concentrate on writing the doctoral thesis, without the demands of other work. The amount of the fellowship is $2,000 and is awarded via two competitions held in late November or early December and in early June of each year. (Doctoral Disseration Fellowship)

Federal Forms of Financial Aid

The U.S. Government offers several forms of subsidized aid for all levels of university studies, including graduate studies. The types of aid include grants, loans, and work study. To be eligible, you must be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent U.S. resident. Financial aid awards are determined by calculating a student's "need", which is equal to the cost of pursuing an education minus the student's contributions. In order to be considered for Federal Financial Aid, a student must complete a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be submitted after January 1 but before March 1 for the following academic year. For more information about Federal Financial Aid, go to the University's Financial Aid Office homepage, at http://vm.uconn.edu/~wwwfaid/.
