REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS

  • Official transcripts: Request an official transcript from each college/university you attended.

    • Ask that the transcript be sent to UConn in a sealed envelope.

Official transcripts are issued by the college or university attended and bear the impressed or colored seal of that institution. If you attended the University of Connecticut, you do not need to request a copy -- we can obtain one directly on your behalf.

Important: Your application will not be considered until all official transcripts are received. If you register for additional courses during the time when your application is being considered, you should notify the Graduate School so that your file can be updated. Transcripts become the property of the University.

Note: The most common reason for delayed consideration of graduate school applications is missing or unofficial transcripts. To be sure you can include all the transcripts with your application, request them from the schools you attended at least two months prior to the deadline for submission of your application. Unofficial transcripts or Certified Copies are not acceptable. Do not open the sealed transcripts you send to us.

  • Official GMAT score report: Applicants to the Operations and Information Management concentration may submit a GRE or a GMAT score. All other applicants must submit an official GMAT score report, regardless of their background. We do not have a minimum score requirement, however if you score below 550 we recommend you retake the exam. If you have not yet taken the exam, or if your score is more than five years old, you should schedule to take the exam.

    GMAT test registration: GMAT.
GMAT Scores should be sent to Institution code CV2-CO-20.

GRE test registration: Educational Testing Service (ETS)
GRE Scores should be sent to Institution code 3915.

  • Statement of Purpose (Send electronically from your e-mail address to PHDapplication@business.uconn.edu): Please write an essay describing your main strengths and why you wish to undertake a doctoral program in your intended area of concentration. As part of this essay, also describe how the doctoral program fits into your long-term interests and objectives.

  • Current Resume (Send electronically from your e-mail address to PHDapplication@business.uconn.edu)

  • Three Letters of Recommendation: (Must be sent electronically from YOUR RECOMMENDER e-mail address to PHDapplication@business.uconn.edu) There is no specific form for letters of recommendation. To the extent possible, these letters should be from academic faculty, and should comment on the applicant’s potential for intensive doctoral studies, ability and motivation for scholarly research, and teaching capacity.

  • Application Fee: The application fee is $55 for the Graduate School electronic application. This fee is nonrefundable and must be paid by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover). This fee cannot be waived or deferred. An application will not be officially received, and thereafter reviewed by the admissions committee, if the application fee has not been paid.

International Applicants

In addition to the items listed above, international applicants should pay careful attention to the following requirements:

  • English Proficiency:
TOEFL and IELTS test scores are sent directly to the Graduate School, code 3915.

International students who are not native speakers of English must submit evidence of their proficiency in the English language. You may use the results from either one of two standardized tests for this purpose. If you submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must have a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or 80 for the Internet-based test. If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you must have an average overall score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable.

The TOEFL or IELTS requirement is waived for those international applicants who have received a university degree in the United States, or a degree in a four-year program with English as the language of instruction. (If English was language of instruction, please send confirming statement from the University).

Note on Teaching Assistant positions: To qualify for an unrestricted appointment as a graduate teaching assistant with classroom instructional contact, you must present evidence of proficiency in spoken English. On the IELTS, with a score of 7 on the Speaking band, you may be permitted to have classroom instructional contact after further testing by the International Teaching Assistant Program to assess the need for English support. A score of 8 or higher on the Speaking band makes you eligible for classroom contact with no further English proficiency testing. You may also submit a score of at least 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) if you take it prior to January 1, 2005. After that time the revised TOEFL will contain a Speaking component. (Minimum score requirements will be set after we have some experience with the new TOEFL)
In all cases your submitted test results must be no more than two years old.

  • Official Transcripts: International applicants must supply official copies of academic transcripts from all university studies. These transcripts must be accompanied by an official English translation of each document.

  • Degree Statements: The Graduate School also requires all International Applicants to provide an official Statement of Degree, for each University where a degree was awarded. Each official Degree Statement must be accompanied by an official English translation.

  • International Students must complete the Financial Declaration

The admission review process begins February 1. Applications may be submitted after that date, but will be considered on a space-available basis.
