Become a fan of the UConn School of Business on Facebook! | | | | | | |  |  | | UConn School of Business eNews | Dr. Dechant Delivers Keynote Address at Female Entrepreneurship Program On May 5, Dr. Kathleen Dechant, Management Department, delivered a keynote address at the Female Entrepreneurship Program sponsored by the Emirates Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Dechant notes that “this program is a good opportunity… to collectively deliberate on how we believe the path of Arab Women Entrepreneurs should be shaped to take advantage of our global economy.” Approximately 150 women participated in the one-day event.Dr. Dechant's participation in the program was the first initiative undertaken between the business schools of United Arab Emirates University and the University of Connecticut under its recently signed Memorandum of Understanding encouraging joint projects, research and teaching among faculty. Read More | Entrepreneurship Research Exemplars Conference Participants in the Entrepreneurship Research Exemplars Conference described the conference as being “fantastic”, “memorable”, “excellent” and “historic.” The Entrepreneurship Research Exemplars Conference co-sponsored by the Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CCEI) and the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management was held at the UConn School of Business from May 28th to May 30th, 2009. This was an invited best practices conference for advancing research excellence in entrepreneurship. Over 60 research scholars participated on-site and over 300 bypassed geographic boundaries by participating via live web streaming video. Read More | NYC Connections Event Honored with U-Learn Award The event "NYC Connections: Alumni Outreach for Business Students Heading to New York" received the U-Learn Award from the UConn Alumni Association. This event was hosted by the UConn School of Business Alumni and the NYC Chapter of the UConn Alumni Association. The U-Learn Award is presented annually to geographic groups and other alumni groups that have distinguished themselves through exceptional program offerings. Read More | "Opportunity KnockS" Campaign Brings in 100 New Jobs for UConn Students and Alumni Understanding how the economy has greatly challenged the job prospects for UConn students, the UConn School of Business Career Center embarked upon a campaign to identify new jobs and internships for our students. The great success of this program has introduced 100 new positions available to undergraduates, MBAs and alumni. The positions posted included junior accountant, business development manager, director of relationship management, website publishing, among others and were located both in Connecticut and as far as Taipei, Taiwan. This is the highest award given by the organization. It signifies "service above self" to the local community. Kelly Kennedy is a 10-year member of the West Hartford Rotary Club. |  |  | The UConn School of Business would like to acknowledge the employees who are retiring as a result of the Retirement Incentive Program. These outstanding and dedicated members of the School have had valued careers at UConn: Dr. Jeffrey Kramer, Programs in Healthcare and Insurance Studies; Jane Scott, Marketing Department; Dr. Jack Viega, Management Department; and Barbara Woodward, Finance Department and Programs in Healthcare Management and Insurance Studies. Emily Reik '09 passed away on Saturday, June 6. Emily was a 2009 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Business, with a major in Health Care Management and a minor in Psychology. She loved art, traveling, running and cooking. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Emily can consider a donation to either the Boys & Girls Club of America, with whom Emily had worked, or to the UConn Foundation. Prior to joining Financial Strategies Investment Advisor Services, Mr. Brault worked at companies such as Alliance Bernstein, Dreyfus Management, and Morgan Stanley in positions including senior vice president, senior portfolio manager, and vice president. | | | | Vincent J. Calabres, Jr. ’98 MBA was promoted to chief financial officer of F.N.B. Corporation located in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Mr. Calabrese brings over twenty-one years of experience in the financial industry and was previously senior vice president, corporate controller and principal accounting officer at F.N.B. Corporation. F.N.B. Corporation is a financial service company and a leading provider of commercial and retail banking, leasing, wealth management, insurance, merchant banking and consumer finance services. | | | | Regina D. Foley ’86 was recently appointed to chief compliance officer, chief financial officer, treasurer, and secretary of the Taiwan Greater China Fund. Ms. Foley has over twenty years of experience in accounting and finance industries and has worked for both financial services and reinsurance companies. Ms. Foley also has extensive experience in creating and administering internal controls in accounting processes and operations. | | | | Paul Giardina ’99 MBA has been named chief executive officer at Protegrity Corporation in Stamford, Connecticut. Mr. Giardina joined Protegrity in 2004 serving as senior vice president overseeing marketing, product management, research and development. Protegrity Corporation is a leading provider of Data Security Management Solutions. | | | | Debbie Kaufman ’08 was a contestant on “I Survived a Japanese Gameshow”, a reality show currently airing on ABC. Debbie notes that building upon her studies in professional selling, “I actually used skills that I learned at the UCONN School of Business while interviewing to get on the show”, which “helped land me a plane ticket to Tokyo and the experience of a lifetime!” | | | | Kenneth P. Murphy ’82 has accepted a position at Connecticut College located in New London, Connecticut, as the men’s soccer head coach. Mr. Murphy comes to Connecticut College from Brown University as the assistant soccer coach. Previously Mr. Murphy spent sixteen years on Wall Street as a successful commodities broker. | | | | John F. Reilly ’99 MBA has been appointed to vice president of corporate finance and treasurer at The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. is ranked among the top 40 property and casualty insurers in the United States and offers a wide range of property and casualty products. Mr. Reilly most recently held a position at The Hartford Financial Services group where he served in senior-level positions in investor relations, finance and business development. | | | | John R. Riley ’99 MBA recently accepted a position with First Republic Bank in Boston, Massachusetts as managing director of foreign exchange. Mr. Riley has over twenty years of banking and currency risk advisory experience and will help manage the foreign exchange needs of clients in New England and New York. | | | | Nicholas R. Roy ’06 recently created a financial planning company geared toward the needs of individual investors, Somnio Financial Group in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Somnio Financial Group provides tailored financial planning and ongoing advice to their clients to help them meet their wealth goals. Previously, Mr. Roy was employed at Ameriprise Financial as a financial advisor. | | | | Robert J. Sawicki ’95 MBA recently accepted a position at Magellan Health Services located in Avon, Connecticut, as senior vice president of learning performance. Magellan Health Services provides specialty health care management and innovative solutions in collaboration with health plans, corporations and government agencies and their members nationwide. Mr. Sawicki was most recently employed at The Hartford as vice president of leadership and professional development. | | | | Charles D. Scoville, Jr. ’77 is joining datAvail Corporation as managing director of sales.
