Dr. Dan Chen Visits the UConn School of Business from Shandong University (SDU), China (4/24/2009) - For two weeks in April 2009, the UConn School of Business hosted Dr. Dan Chen, Associate Professor of Management and International Program Coordinator of the School of Management at Shandong University (SDU), China. The State of CT has enjoyed an official sister state relationship with Shandong province for over 20 years. This year marks the first year of an official memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the respective flagship universities. Dr. Chen is the first visiting scholar to the School from Shandong University. Over the last two years, a solid working relationship between the two business schools has been developing where regular faculty exchanges for teaching and research, as well as MBA student exchange visits as an integral part of our MBA programs are taking place. Dr. Chen visited the UConn School of Business to conduct research and gather information that she can use in her research, as well as to discuss collaborative research with the School’s faculty; so far 3 or 4 UConn faculty have been identified as interested in further discussion with her. Dr. Qing Cao, Assistant Professor in the Management Department, recently published an article with Dr. Chen’s colleague at SDU, Dr. Hongping Zhang. Dr. Chen received a BA and MA from the School of Economics at Shandong University in China, and a PhD from the Bangor Business School at the Bangor University in the UK. Dr. Chen’s research interests include Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Strategic Management in SMEs; Inter-firm Cooperation and Strategic Alliances. UConn is one of the few American MBA programs that takes students to a “second tier” city in Jinan, China, as well as to more traditional cultural and business visits in Beijing and Shanghai. Jinan is the capital of Shandong province and home to SDU, making this aspect of our program an added value differentiator. SDU and UConn have already conducted student exchange visits with MBA students. Last October, a group of MBA students from SDU visited UConn Stamford. UConn has taken 30 Part-Time MBA students to visit SDU each fall semester for the past 2 years. Dr. Timothy Dowding, Professor In-Residence in the Operations and Information Management Department, taught an MBA class at SDU last summer and has been invited back to teach again this July. Dr. Pan Ailing will also come from SDU as a visiting scholar to UConn’s Accounting Department for this fall semester. Dean Christopher Earley will also visit SDU in Fall 2009 to further cement our growing relationship. Photo: Dr. Dan Chen with UConn School of Business faculty members.
