23rd Annual Teenage Business Program (4/14/2009) - On Saturday, April 4, 2009, over 80 high school students from Connecticut schools in Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury, Stamford and New London visited the UConn School of Business for the 23rd annual Teenage Business Program. Each year, the Office of Diversity Initiatives collaborates with the UConn Upward Bound Program to bring high school students from inner cities throughout Connecticut to campus for a day long program of workshops, presentations and a campus tour. These high school students also have the opportunity to attend panel sessions with current UConn students as well business professionals. This year, in addition to Upward Bound program, expanded our partnership to include a Career Beginnings presentation. School of Business faculty, including Dr. Joseph Golec, Finance; Dr. Qing Cao, Management; Dr. Murphy Sewall, Marketing; Dr. Mo Hussein, Accounting; and Dr. Ramesh Sankaranarayan, MIS presented to the students, as well as UConn School of Business alumni Alpa Patel '08, Dane Walton '07 and Hasan Henry '08 speaking on learderships, majors, and other college life issues. A current student, Gina Garzon '09, also spoke to the high school seniors and upward bound alums about INROADS, a program to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership.. The Teenage Business Program was initiated in recognition of the fact that greater minority participation in the business sector can only be achieved through the foundation of a quality education and opportunities for students to engage in skill development activities before entering college.
