Northeast Utilities and UConn Introduce NU Finance Academy (3/3/2008) - On February 25th Northeast Utilities (NU) and the UConn School of Business officially launched the NU Finance Academy. This new educational program is uniquely customized to enhance financial, analytical and leadership skills of NU financial and business professionals."We are offering this opportunity to enable you to expand your career development, benefit from the highest quality education and training available and move forward within our company," said David McHale, Sr. VP & CFO of Northeast Utilities in unveiling the program to NU associates. "This investment will position you and our organization to support NU's overall strategic direction and success." The NU Finance Academy, which consists of two custom-designed programs – the Financial Excellence program and the Case Studies program, combines the research and teaching excellence of UConn business school faculty with the expertise of NU leaders to deliver a dynamic curriculum based on real-world knowledge of the industry. The Financial Excellence program offers a challenging curriculum in which participants learn core accounting and financial theory from School of Business professors while NU experts teach the accounting and revenue requirements and financial theory as they apply to NU. The program consists of five custom designed courses in which participants study the fundamentals of the power industry, the electric and gas power markets, the regulatory environment, financial and managerial accounting, rates and revenue requirements, financial management in business, investments, and risk management, with applicable case studies in each subject area. The Case Studies program is a semester-long course that brings business reality into the classroom, building leadership and teamwork skills while analyzing and solving real business problems. The program cases are concentrated in accounting and finance and bring the participant through the assessment and evaluation of a corporation, capital investment analysis, financing of a rapidly growing firm, modeling interest rate exposure, risk mitigation, the use of financial engineering to manage risk and business strategies. The cases are selected to provide insight into the many diverse issues and potential solutions that are relevant to NU. NU Finance Academy classes will be delivered at the UConn Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford. Earlier this year, NU and the business school launched the Graduate Business Studies Program, a leadership development program designed to provide NU participants with exposure to business, industry and financial concepts as well as serve as a precursor to an accredited UConn MBA degree. The program consists of three core MBA courses – Financial Accounting & Reporting, Operations Management, and Managing Organizations – tailored specifically to NU and takes less than one year to complete.
