Hartford EMBA Student Awarded John Ben Snow Memorial Scholarship

Hartford, CT (12/17/2007) - UConn Executive MBA (EMBA) student Julie Gamble was recently awarded the John Ben Snow Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $10,000. Gamble, director of finance and operations for the Community Economic Development Fund in West Hartford, will graduate in April 2009.

The John Ben Snow Memorial Trust Scholarship was established for the EMBA program in 2006 and is designed to help ensure that eligible candidates from the not-for-profit and public sector are provided an opportunity to enhance their business skills and broaden their intellectual abilities.

"Even though my employer is paying for half of my tuition, it is still a financial hardship to pay for school," said Gamble. "I went into the EMBA program already paying off undergraduate student loans, plus I took a considerable cut in salary to join the non-profit organization that I currently work for. The scholarship has relieved a lot of this financial burden."

Historically, the majority of EMBA program participants are sponsored, either fully or in part, by their employers. Recently, however, this has changed as more students have been asked to pay a portion of the tuition and fees themselves. The number of students paying the full cost of their own tuition has also grown considerably.

"There should be only a few obstacles that could deny the ability to pursue graduate education," said Afshin Ghiaei, director of the Executive MBA Program. "Tuition assistance such as this scholarship puts the opportunity well within reach and lessens the financial burden to those who seek to enhance their education and career objectives."

Julie Gamble lives in Tolland with her husband, Charles, and their two dogs, Sarah and Christi. When not at work or in class, Julie also enjoys photography, gardening and fostering guide dogs for Fidelco.
