Program Emphasis/Objectives
The Risk Management and Insurance major emphasizes the basic concepts of risk management and financial planning. These concepts are then brought into sharp focus by exploring the application of current insurance coverage to business and family situations. The objective of the major is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to compete successfully for career opportunities in risk management, insurance, and financial planning.
Career Opportunities
For those who wish to begin their career development in Connecticut, insurance is a particularly well-suited major. Hartford is widely referred to as "The Insurance Capital of the World." Several major insurers have their home offices in Hartford and the surrounding area; and several significant reinsurers are based in Stamford. Many national and regional insurance companies have branch offices in Connecticut with significant concentrations in the Greater Hartford, New Haven-Milford, and Stamford-Norwalk-Bridgeport areas.
In addition, retail insurance agencies, located in almost every city or town nationally, offer attractive professional career opportunities for those graduates possessing an entrepreneurial flair.
