VITA Tax Preparation Sessions

What is VITA?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, run by volunteer accounting students in the School of Business, provides free income tax return preparation assistance to low-income members of the University community as well as to other low-income local residents.

To qualify to have your tax return prepared by a VITA volunteer, you must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. You must be one of the following:
    1. A United States citizen
    2. Married to and filing a joint return with a United States citizen
    3. A non-US citizen considered a “resident” of the United States for tax purposes (generally, you must have been in the United States for the past 5 years)
  2. Your ONLY sources of income can be earned income (from employment), scholarships, fellowships, and interest from bank accounts
  3. Your total income (excluding scholarships and fellowships) must be less than $40,000
  4. We ONLY prepare State of Connecticut income tax returns; if you earned income in another state during 2006, we will NOT be able to assist you.

We will NOT prepare tax returns for international students.

When and where can you get help?

The VITA program will offer assistance to taxpayers at its on-campus site:

When: To be announced

Time: - to be announced

Please do not contact Professor Redemske or the Accounting Department for tax help.

What can VITA do for you?

The student volunteers are trained to prepare simple federal and Connecticut state income tax returns.  Individuals with gross income under $20,000 or married couples with combined gross income less than $40,000 qualify for the service, but those who are self-employed, have securities, or IRAs do not qualify for the service.  No forms containing business income or capital gains can be prepared.  The volunteers can only help with Connecticut and federal forms. No other state returns will be prepared.

To receive confidential assistance from a VITA volunteer, taxpayers should bring the following:

  ·        a copy of the 2005 tax return that was filed by the taxpayer (if one was filed)

·        all documentation for the 2006 tax return, including

·        W2 forms,

·        1099 forms
