A new bioinformatics technology developed at the University of Connecticut to power biomedical research and diagnostics received a boost last week when Connecticut Innovations announced a $500,000 investment in Smpl Bio, UConn announced Monday.
Smpl Bio will use the money to further develop its bioinformatics platform that allows researchers to s gain insights into biomarker research, speeding up the creation of new diagnostics, drugs and therapeutics.
Smpl Bio says its technology provides an alternative to current practices involving the use of public software tools that are difficult to use, restricted in functionality and often require difficult online programming, UConn’s release said.
The company first emerged from the lab of founder Craig Nelson, who is also associate professor of molecular and cell biology at UConn, when a team of his graduate students entered and won UConn’s Innovation Quest (IQ), a university-wide business plan and prototype competition.
