Faculty & Staff

Sulin Ba, professor of OPIM, was named associate dean of academic and research support.

Business Law faculty Gerlinde Berger-Walliser, Robert Bird, Vincent Carrafiello, Mark DeAngelis, Karla Fox (emeritus), Stephen Park and Mark Spurling participated in the 88th annual Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB) conference, held in Boston, Massachusetts.

Professor Timothy Dowding received the Provost’s Award for Outreach and Engagement. Also, he was appointed by State Senator Martin Looney to the Connecticut Nitrogen Credit Trading Board.

Professor John Glascock, Finance Department, served as a co-chair for the International Conference on Housing Policy held in Shenzhen, China.

Richard Hurley ’94 Ph.D., professor of accounting, received the prestigious National Educator Award from the Association of Government Accountants (AGA).

Professor Subhash Jain, Marketing Department, was selected by the Board of the American Marketing Association Global Marketing Special Interest Group (GlobalSIG) to receive the AMA Global Marketing SIG’s 2013 Significant Contributions to Global Marketing Award.

The Psi Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi recently welcomed Kelly Kennedy, program manager at the School of Business Career Center, into the fraternity as its first faculty/staff member.

Assistant Professor Chanatip Kitwiwattanachai, Finance Department, received funding from the 2013 GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals) Risk Management Research Program for the project, “Learning Network Structure of Financial Institutions from CDS Data.”

Professors Hongju Liu, Nicholas Lurie and Joseph Pancras, Marketing Department, have received research awards from the Marketing Science Institute (MSI) competition, “Mobile Platforms, Location-Based Services, and Their Impact on Customers.”

Professor John Mathieu, Management Department, Cizik Chair, was inducted as an Academy of Management fellow.

Professor Gary Powell, Management Department, was named a Distinguished Scholar of Lancaster University Management School (UK) for a two-year period beginning September 30, 2013.

Rajendra S. Shirolé was appointed director for the UConn Full-time MBA Program.

Programs & Initiatives

The School of Business has partnered with the Wall Street Journal to offer students and faculty complimentary access to its premium digital products, including WSJ Online and smartphone and tablet apps.

UConn has approved a new undergraduate Financial Management major which will be open to students at the Stamford campus.

Governor Dannel Malloy declared September 20 “Women’s Entrepreneur Day” in Connecticut, kicking off the Connecticut Celebrates Women Entrepreneurs conference at UConn Stamford (See page 4).

The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) graduated its fourth class of 25 participants on October 12.

The School’s Center for International Business Education & Research hosted students from all over the world to compete in the annual CIBER Case Challenge October 9-12.

On November 7, Lauren Creutz ’06 MBA, HR partner at Aetna, presented “Where the Jobs are in Healthcare” as part of the School’s Alumni Career Conversations series.

On November 12, the UConn Chapter of MBA Women International, in association with the School of Business, presented “The Value of a Day’s Work,” a panel discussion on pay equity, knowing your worth at work, and negotiating benefits and salary. Moderated by Professor Lucy Gilson, the panel featured Melissa Cummings ’98 MBA, vice president for strategic product solutions at Aetna Inc.; Helen Frye, vice president of human resources/business support services at Prudential Retirement; Christine Palm, director of communications for Connecticut’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women; and Professor Gary Powell.

The MSFRM Program hosted the 2nd Annual Connecticut Risk Management Conference: Aligning Risk Management with Strategy on November 14 at the Stamford Marriott. Featured speakers included private consultant and New York Times best-selling author William Cohan and Luis Custodio, IBM’s chief risk officer and vice president of pension management.

Alumni

Mark Boxer ’87 MBA, CIGNA EVP and global chief information officer, along with School of Business alumni, faculty, and administrators, welcomed new MBA, MSFRM, and MSBAPM students at a student/alumni networking event in Hartford, Connecticut.

Ambassador Paul W. Speltz ’69, ’72 MBA, chairman and CEO of Global Strategic Associates, LLC, visited with UConn Business Connections Learning Community (BCLC) and Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) students to discuss the importance of leveraging international experience in their undergraduate studies.

Students

Sarah Scheffel ’14, Akanksha Singh ’16 and Jonathan Sanchez ’14 (CLAS) competed in the 7th annual Business Language Case Competition.

Members of the UConn chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) attended the organization’s 38th Eastern Region Student Conference (ERSC). Students included: Brandon Madden ’16, Shantaye Taylor ’16, Yanashley Bures-Ortiz ’17, Kadijah McGehee ’16, Harris Baucicaut ’13, and Schneider Jean-Baptiste ’16.

Management doctoral student Nicole Jones received the Promising Young Educator Award at the Ph.D. Project Management Doctoral Students Association Conference.

More than 400 undergraduate students attended the 2nd Annual Business Career Expo hosted by the School of Business Career Center on October 4.
